Hello, everyone. I heard that the result of the second JLPT in 2021 has been sent. How was your result? There was no one who took the test among my students, but I hope as many participants of you as possible have passed the test. After the year end and new year, due to the raising number of COVID infected people, Kumamoto Prefecture has been experiencing closure of schools and institutions and shortened business hours of bars and restaurants. As for me, almost all of my classes are held on-line, and communication regarding translation work is done through e-mails, so not much has changed. I am thankful everyday for the working style, as well as the students who keep taking my classes and those who give me translation jobs and other work to do. On the other hand, cooking classes and one-day Japanese lesson events, in which I would like to meet people in person, haven't been planned because institutions where I would like to rent space for those events are not functioning. I will inform here or on my Facebook page when any of the events seem to come true. I heard that it will be cold again this week. Please take care of your health condition, everyone!

Hello, everyone! It's already in the middle of September now. The application for the JLPT winter 2021 was closed at 5p.m. today. Have you applied for the test? Many of my students and my friends say that August has past so quickly. I think so too, myself. Was it because of the rain that lasted for nearly two weeks? Did you have good times this summer? My husband and I went to BBQ with our friend last weekend. We didn't know until the day, but it seems like there are camping places and parks in Kumamoto Prefecture where visitors from other cities (even within the prefecture!) are not allowed to go in to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We were like "but we will be outside...," but rules are rules, huh? From my experience, I suggest that you check the place you want to visit even if it is an open-air place like a camping place or a park.
Hi everyone. It's been a while. I hadn't updated anything on my blog for more than a month because I was working on making videos to upload on Youtube so that people who don't take my lessons can see them, too. I searched for many things to make my videos as it was my first time to make videos. I then realized how hard it is to make videos and graphics. I've already uploaded 9 videos because I had more time than usual this month. From next month on I think I will upload videos in a slower pace, but hopefully I will share many videos about Japanese language, life in Japan and about Kumamoto. This is the latest video: Kumamoto dialect lesson
Good afternoon everyone. Today I had kashiwamochi for once. I think you have seen this Japanese sweet in Japanese sweets section at a supermarket. It's mochi wrapped in a green leaf and the mochi is basically white, some are green from yomogi herb, some are colored pink. The mochi has a good smell of the leaf and goes well with green tea. There are two types of leaves for kashiwamochi. The round one on the right picture is Sarutori-ibara, the one that has been used in Kyushu (and Kansai) since a long time ago. In Kanto, on the other hand, the jaggy one on the left picture is Kashiwa. My mom would pick some sarutori-ibara from a mountain when we went to the sea shore in my hometown and made mochi with the leaves. You can find the round leaf kashiwamochi in road stations and local specialty stores in Kyushu, where you can get many other local food products. The difference between the two types of leaves are not only their shapes. The round one is edible and it's okay to eat with the mochi, but the jaggy one is rather hard and not easily digested, so please eat only the mochi. I have mainly had students who are Kumamoto residents because I want to help them with daily life tips in Kumamoto. However, because I've got some inquiries about teaching Japanese to people in other countries, I thought I would try.
I teach virtually by Skype. You can pay by Paypal or credit card (I will send you a Paypal bill by e-mail and you will use your credit card, information of which I will never know). Of course there are time differences between other countries and Japan, but please let me know if you live in overseas and want to or already have a plan to live in Japan in the near future, or if you are away from Japan at the moment and do not want to forget too much Japanese before coming back, or if you are planning to take JLPT in your country and need a coach Also, I also do essay correction, sentence correction for those who can't have regular lessons. Please send me a message if you are interested.
One week ago I had the first cooking class after two years. The menu was: Shrimp chirashi-zushi, miso soup with bamboo shoot and fresh onion, spring vegetable salad with onion dressing We used a lot of spring vegetables for the dishes and enjoyed eating them. I hope to have the class two or three more times this year. (English below)
I went to Tachioka Nature Park in Uto city on Saturday with my husband to see cherry blossoms. It was about 50 minutes from the center of Kumamoto city. In the park, there are two big ponds. One was made by Kiyomasa Kato in 1611 and the other one was created in 1855. Fully bloomed cherry blossoms of 2000 cherry trees attract many people every year during hanami season. This year, it kept raining last weekend and it was going to rain (and it actually did) this Sunday, so quite a lot of people visited the park yesterday. Fully occupied parking space and even temporary parking spaces, too! I made casual bento for lunch and we ate at a bench and enjoyed walking around the ponds. I truly recommend this place if you haven't been there yet. There are a lot more cherry trees than you see in the photos. Especially the road between the ponds has cherry trees on the both sides and it is very beautiful. If you go for hanami, do not forget bento and a picnic sheet! (English below)
It's been over a month since the last blog post! I have been spending more time for preparation of classes for students who will take the JLPT in December. Also, I had plans on weekends. Then I finally realized that it's been such a long time. The weather has been pretty, hasn't it? We don't use the air conditioners anymore in the house. I think it's the perfect season for taking a walk. Speaking of walk, have you noticed some smell when you are outside? There are a couple of smells that make me feel autumn has come. Kinmokusei (orange osmathus) The tree which has many small flowers in autumn. The flowers has a distinctively sweet smell and you will definitely notice it when you walk by. Ginnan (Gingko nuts from maidenhair tree) Nuts from maidenhair trees. Nuts fall off from trees in autumn and the skin and fruit smell.....badly. Many people do not like this smell, but the nuts themselves are used in Japanese dishes such as savory egg custard (chawan-mushi). The Kumamoto's symbol Kumamoto castle has nickname "Ginnan-jo (gingko castle)." What smell makes you feel autumn?
Good evening! As you probably know, another typhoon is coming this weekend and this one will go right through Kyushu. I hope it doesn't become so strong, but let's get ready for it just in case to avoid as much damage as possible. 1. Charge your phone and computer If your cooking oven is electric, not gas, cook rice a little more than usual. Cook more dishes as well and put them in the fridge ・調理せずに食べられる食べ物を用意しておく(パンや缶詰、生野菜など) Buy some food that you can eat without cooking (bread, canned food, vegetables that you can eat raw) ・ろうそくや電池で使えるランプなどを用意する Prepare some candles or a lamp that you can use a dry cell 2.雨風に備えて For rain and wind ・風で飛びそうなものが家の外にあるなら、玄関や部屋に入れておくか、絶対に飛ばないようにカバーをつけたりロープで固定したりする (バルコニーにあっても飛んで人の迷惑になる可能性があります) Put things outside into your genkan (inside the entrance) or in your room if they are light and may easily get swept by wind You can also put a cover on them or fix them with a rope or something (things in your balcony may be swept too and hit someone or someone's belongings) ・窓ガラスの外側に当たるものがあればよけておく Do not put things near outside your window to avoid their hitting the window Try to stay at home (You may get hit by something or get soaked even if you use an umbrella)
Good evening. How was your summer vacation? If you are still on your vacation, how is it going? I didn't have an obon holiday or summer vacation, but my husband and I took a day trip by car to nearby towns to enjoy nature, where there was almost no one besides us. Recently, I get sweaty when I cook something in the kitchen because it's so hot. I've been trying to make some dishes that I don't need to cook with gas, or dishes that I can cook in a short time. Yesterday I bought a whole fresh fish and cut a half of it into sashimi. I marinated the sashimi pieces in soy sauce and mirin for about two hours. I made zuke-don (marinated sashimi rice bowl) with cooled rice (not chilled) and sprinkled sesame, chopped green onion and added wasabi. In summer I like to top chopped shiso on the rice bowl. This time I used shiso and green onion from our planters. Another dish which is good for summer is boiled pork salad. Boil pork slices for 2-3 minutes, cooled them. Put them on cut lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes etc. and pour your favorite salad dressing. You can eat this salad even on a hot summer day because it's not hot at all. And it can be a main dish of your meal. I hope you have as balanced meals as possible even when you don't feel like cooking because of the hot weather. |
