I made shiso juice for the first time. The red color is very nice, isn't it?
The ingredients are only red shiso, sugar, cytric acid (or lemon juice) and water. It took only an hour to prepare it. The sweet-sour flavor is really good for the hot summer.

It was a nice weather today. Not hot, not cold, almost no rain. The rainy season is coming, so I will go buy products for preventing mold and too much humidity. By the way, do you know how to say "heart" in Japanese? We have two words. We use "心(kokoro)" when we mean heart in an emotional theme. We use "心臓(shinzou)" when we mean a part of our body. Perhaps many students know "kokoro" but not "shinzou", I think? So these two sentences mean different things. Kokoro ga itai. My heart hurts (feels sorry for someone). Shinzou ga itai. My heart hurts (for some health problem). Good morning! It has been cool and nice in the morning. The other day, a student of mine talked about a trouble she had. She said "I said 'no, I certainly made a phone call yesterday'. " (Iie, kinou watashi wa kanarazu denwa shimashita) I felt it somehow odd when she used "kanarazu" in the sentence. I did understand what she meant, though. So, today's lesson is about how to use "kanarazu". In English it can be translated as "for sure" or "certainly", but in Japanese the usage is limited to the things that always happen or things you guess about the future. (He always comes late for the first period class.) Ex.2 Ashita no yoji ni kanarazu denwa shimasu. (I will make sure to call you tomorrow at 4.) Basically, you can't use it for things in the past. Ex.3 (bad example) Kesa, kanarazu kusuri o nomimashita. This morning I took the medicine for sure. I think this sentence should be changed to Kesa, machigai naku kusuri o nomimashita. or Kesa, kusuri o nonda hazu desu. However, I think it's ok to use kanarazu for things that always happened. In that case, the ending of a sentence should have a kind of nuance which expresses "you always thought about the action" or "it continued for a certain period of time". Ex.4 Gakusei no koro, jugyou no ato kanarazu toshokan de benkyou suru you ni shimashita. As a student, I always tried to study in the library after class. Ex.5 Sensei wa mainichi kanarazu obentou o motte kite imashita. My teacher always brought his own bento. What do you eat everyday besides meals?
At my home I usually prepare some light snack between lunch and dinner. Not everyday, but I bake sweets, too. Recently I often bake something that doesn't cost much, easy to make, stays good until the following day. We have a hand mixer, but I had not really used it much. Now I bake a cake from my favorite comic book at least once a week because it's easy to make with a hand mixer! I add some ingredients to enjoy different flavors. Today I put lemon flavor frosting and grated white chocolate on a basic cake. (See the photo above) You can add cocoa power and chocolate chips in the mixing, or matcha powder in the mixing and sprinkle almond slices on top (the one I baked a week or two ago), or put frosting. I like baking, but I don't like to eat a lot of sweets. I prefer savory snacks. But my husband loves sweets so he seems happy with those freshly baked cakes. |
