Hi everyone. It's hot today, isn't it? But I guess it's a good sign that the rainy days are finally over. Have you eaten unagi, or eel in Japan before? Raw eel's skin is slimy and you can find eels only in a few areas in Japan, so if you have eaten one, I think it's sweet soy sauce flavor unagi from either at a unagi restaurant or as a bento from a supermarket or a bento store. In Japan, it is said that Japanese people have used to have unagi since thousands years ago. The one with sweet soy sauce flavor started to be eaten only about 200 years ago in Edo, current Tokyo. There is a day when your fatigue from summer heat will go away if you eat eels. It is called "Doyou no ushi no hi." Doyou doesn't mean doyoubi (Saturday), but a period between seasons. Ushi in this phrase means a day used in Japanese old calendar. There are some Doyou no ushi no hi every year, but recent years the summer doyou no ushi no hi has been considered Unagi (eel) day. So why eel? It is because eel has been known as a stamina food since more than a thousand years ago. Doyou is, as mentioned above, a period between seasons, when people can easily feel sick. Eel is a perfect food for such times like this. By the way, the concept "doyou no ushi no hi = eel" was created by Gennai Hiraga, a guy known in many fields - as an inventor, painter and a dutch scholar - in Edo period. He suggested an eel restaurant that they advertise their eel dishes with this catch "you can be healthier and energetic if you eat eels on doyou no ushi no hi" and the restaurant became famous. Doyou no ushi no hi differs every year and this year the summer one is on July 21st. If you haven't planed any meal for the day, how about buy an unagi meal, or eat at an unagi restaurant? You could beat this summer heat.

Good evening, everyone. From today on, plastic bags to put purchased products (the bag is called レジ袋 れじぶくろ) in are charged in stores - needless to say supermarkets and daily supply stores, but also at pharmacies and convenience stores and all other stores! There have been some stores where plastic bags are charged since some years ago, but now all stores charge for the bags. The price of a bag differs depending on the store, but it is about 2-5 yen. Frankly speaking, I feel like "phew, finally they started it in Japan!" In the countries I have lived and countries I have traveled to, bringing one's own shopping bag (エコバッグ) was a common thing. A plastic bag cost about 20 to 50 Japanese yen. I have carried my own shopping bag since many years ago, so my life will not change much by this plastic bag charging system. I sometimes received a plastic bag when I did a small purchase at a convenience store, though... I will try not to forget to take my own bag with me when I go to a convenience store. How about your country? Since when have plastic bags been charged for? Is carrying your own shopping bag already your habit? |
