This Saturday (September 2nd), the fun event "子飼100円笑店街" will be held. The host is 子飼商店街(Kokai Shoutengai) in Chuo-ward, Kumamoto city. This is a shopping street that remains old Japanese (Showa period). There are many individual shops (meat, fish, clothing, prepared dishes, flowers etc.) and it has been called "the locals' kitchen". On this event, shops will prepare something for 100 yen, which is quire reasonable for its quality or quantity, and you will enjoy walking around to see what is on special. Last time I went there, I bought for example "jam as many carrots into a bag as you want" and it was fun. Some kinds of fresh fish were also for 100 yen each. I like buying prepared dishes (for example potato croquettes and fried chicken) and eating them for lunch in the area. Oh, I also have to mention that the green tea ice cream twist at a tea shop is great. This event is held about once in a season, so if you miss this chance the next one will be in December. If you have time, I really recommend you go and enjoy shopping at the street this Saturday!

There are some occasions that we share food from one plate or one box. Have you seen only one piece left on the plate/box for a long time? In Kumamoto, we call it "Higo no iccho nokoshi". "Higo" is the old name of Kumamoto, and "iccho" means one piece. It is said that Kumamotoeans tend to leave one last piece. I don't know when it started, but the possible reasons are: 1. It is thought in Kumamoto (or all over Japan) that the person who takes the last piece is greedy (because taking the last piece means he is the one who finishes the plate) 2. To show gratitude to the maker of the food and tell him/her that he had enjoyed so much he cannot finish the last one and maybe some other reasons, but I think number 1 is the most likely. Actually, similar expressions exist in other prefectures/regions, too. How about your country?

I'm back in Japan. Our schedule has changed in the last few days and we had to stay in Germany one night before flights. So we got less time to spend in my husband's home, but the half-day stay in Germany was good, in a way, though, since I have lived in Germany for 7 months years ago and I always wanted to be back in Germany. I used to manage my daily life by speaking German when I lived there, but this time words wouldn't come out of my mouth and it was hard to remember words. I was shocked at myself. After I left Germany, I started to learn my husband's mother language so now this is one of the languages that come in handy when needed. (I seldom use it in Japan, though.) So, what I want to say is that you can so quickly forget languages you've learned if you don't use them. If you're a Japanese language learner, you must make effort to remember it. It's good to read old textbooks again, or watch Japanese TV programs, or read something on the internet. This short stay in Germany made my mind to refresh my German skills as well as my husband's mother language. |
