Plastic reduction challenge
As of July 1st, 2020, stores in Japan started to charge customers for plastic shopping bags in order to reduce plastic waste.
I took it as a good opportunity to know how much plastic is used in my activity area and how much plastic I can reduce.
This is the record of the one-week challenge.

I took it as a good opportunity to know how much plastic is used in my activity area and how much plastic I can reduce.
This is the record of the one-week challenge.
The purpose of the challenge
Learning how much I use plastic and how much plastic is used around me
Trying to reduce plastic within my possible range
(Do not be too strict to myself, do not spend much money, do not cause other people troubles with this challenge)
Trying to think which plastic use I can stop after the challenge and what habit to reduce plastic during the challenge can be continued even after the challenge
What I will do
I will not throw away plastic products that I already have in my house, but will try to use alternatives
I will try to choose plastic-free (or less plastic) products if there is a choice when grocery shopping
Take notes of what I notice and what I do to visualize my challenge

Day 1
Main purpose
Buying eggs in paper package, checking where paper-packaged eggs are sold
Buying non-plastic packed vegetables
I had a day off and went to three supermarket chains.
I thought I knew that a huge amount of plastic is used for packaging.
When I entered each supermarket and consciously looked around, however, I was shocked at the amount.
Vegetables and fruits were almost the only things I could buy plastic-free, and even among vegetables and fruits, only a few products - heads of cabbages, avocados, tomatoes, oranges and watermelons - were sold plastic-free.
I think it was about 20 percent of vegetables and fruits.
I bought a head of cabbage and avocados.
One of the three chains sells eggs individually, so I took an empty plastic package of eggs I bought in the previous week.
I found out that they don't sell eggs individually now to prevent the corona virus spread.
The prepared food and bread and rolls that used to be sold individually were all packed in plastic.
Among the three chains, the only one supermarket had paper-packaged eggs so I bought them.
The paper-packaged eggs are more expensive than the other eggs, though...
The supermarket is Youme Town.
I also bought some meat, but as you can imagine, I couldn't avoid plastic trays and bags for meat.
Since I was coming back a little late for dinner, I bought yakitori at a convenience store.
Everything else - bento, rolls etc. - is packed in plastic.
These yakitori came in a paper bag.
Day 2
I had another day off. No shopping for this day.
I still had many vegetables and some fruits that I got from my parents and my parents' neighbors in the previous week.
These are all safe and locally grown. No plastic package for them.
I wanted to reduce food garbage, not only plastic garbage,
so I made "veggie broth" out of edges and skins of vegetables that I used.
I heard that there are a lot of nutrition you can get with the broth.
However, please do not use skins or edges of veggies that you are unsure if they were grown with chemicals
or you know that they were.
You would rather take in chemicals than become healthy.
If you are unsure if the veggies you have were grown with chemicals,
do not use the outer leaves or skins.

Day 3
I went to Kokai shopping street after work outside my home.
I also went to nearby supermarkets and you-you Kumamoto, JA farmers' market in the afternoon.
At a meat shop in Kokai, there are some meat that you can buy by weight.
This type of meat is put in a plastic bag but not on a plastic tray.
I bought some parts of meat this way.
The green onion I bought at a veggie store didn't need any bag, so I put it in my own shopping bag directly.
I bought petit tomatoes at another veggie store. These were sold on a bowl to display and the shop staff put tomatoes into a plastic bag.
Vegetables sold on a bowl are rarely packed in plastic.
Bacon, sausages and tofu are of course packed in plastic trays at supermarkets.
Fresh fish is sold unpacked and by weight or unit at a fish section in many supermarkets, so you can buy it without a plastic tray.
At you you Kumamoto, I bought brown rice by weight.
I took my own plastic bag for the rice, but according to the shop staff, she could only put in their special reusable bag or free paper bag.
I had my rice in a paper bag.
This paper bag is thick and tough, so it's good to keep onion or potatoes.
I also bought fried tofu from a tofu vendor that was there today.
Fried tofu was in a plastic bag, not a tray.
She gave me a bag of okara, or tofu's leftover pulp.
Okara has a lot of fiber and remaining soy beans' nutrition.

Day 4
I only bought a bag of mixed vegetables on this day. Of course, I used my own shopping bag.
Now we grow mini tomatoes, green beans, shiso and a few others in our planters and we eat them little by little besides the vegetables we buy at stores.
Come to think of it, harvesting what we need and using it on the day is one of the things we can do to reduce plastic bags and packages.

Day 5
No shopping on this day.
We saw a difference in the amount of plastic garbage of the week compared to usual weeks.
Usually, we use a 30 liter plastic bag for plastic garbage and the bag is full.
Especially plastic food trays take so much space in a bag.
This is a picture of the bag with plastic garbage this week. The following day was a day for plastic garbage
and you see, there is still some space!
This means our plastic garbage was reduced.
We moved the garbage into a 20 liter bag before throwing it away.

Day 6
I bought liquid dish detergent.
It's highly biodegradable and therefore good for natural environment.
I had been meaning to buy that kind of detergent!
There are many detergent packages for refill sold at stores and companies are making efforts to reduce plastics.
I also bought a bag of "sodium sesquicarbonate."
Sodium bicarbonate has been popular for cleaning and cooking for the past few years.
Sodium sesquicarbonate is said to be very helpful for cleaning and doing laundry, so I will try it.
There was a phrase in one of the books that I read recently:
"When we want to clean a place, we tend to get a cleaning product with the place's name"
I believe it means for example "bathroom cleaner," "toilet cleanser" etc. That's true!
But actually most of cleaning and washing can be done with a couple of basic cleaning detergent or soap, right?
The phrase made me think a lot.

Day 7
The last day of one-week challenge.
No shopping this day.
For the week I used pottery containers to preserve food instead of plastic containers.
I also used glass jars that I kept when I finished food in the jars.
I read in a book that glass and stainless steel can be recycled almost 100%.
Plastic containers are light and cheap so I often used them,
but I will try to use glass jars and pottery containers more often and I think I will buy stainless steel or glass containers next time I need to buy some containers.

Summery
<Shopping>
I re-realized that it is almost impossible to eliminate plastics when I go grocery shopping.
However, if you know several stores, you can reduce the amount of plastic packaging used for your food.
For example, vegetables in no plastic bags, meat or fish without a tray, products in paper bags instead of plastic bags.
I made snacks by myself instead of buying some packs of snacks at stores.
I know that it requires you time to make snacks at home,
but if you make some once, it will probably last for 2 - 3 days and it can save you some money.
I took my own shopping bags every time I went shopping.
There are many types of shopping bags, but I recommend ones that are light, thin and washable
in that they are kept clean and are easy to carry.
<自宅編>
<At home>
I used glass or pottery containers to store food. I also wrapped vegetables in newspaper or flyers.
I recommend especially glass jars, as you can get them for free after you finish food sold in glass jars.
No need to spend extra money for containers.
I often used containers with lids instead of wrapping food with plastic wraps.
This way you can warm up the food in microwave without using a new plastic wrap, so you can reduce your plastic usage.
<What I can continue to do, what I can change>
・Do not forget a shopping bag when I go shopping
・When there are similar products, buy the one with fewer plastic packaging (except when prices are so different)
・Learn features of several stores and use them wisely according to your needs
・Use glass jars or stainless or pottery containers
・Do not receive unnecessary goods (straws, spoons, extra plastic bags for meat or fish etc.)
It's hard to change many things at once in your life.
It may cost a lot of money, or it may take you more time to do something.
But doing what you can do now little by little makes a big change in the long run - in one month, in a year, in five years.
The first thing to make the big change is to learn the current situation and be aware of plastics around you.
