Eco-friendly life challenge
What is this challenge about?
This challenge is about living eco-friendly life in consideration of the following points:
Reduction of plastic use, especially single-use plastics
Reduction of food loss
Reduction of food mileage
2. 目的 Purpose
I got to read many different books this year and became more concerned about food loss and food mileage. Reduction of food loss is not only reducing waste food itself but also reducing greenhouse gas produced when wasted food is burned as well as reducing waste of resources used on production. Reduction of food mileage helps promoting consumption of food produced in the area and reduce CO2 exhausted on transportation. I would like to learn how to utilize food I buy and reduce food mileage by reconsidering food products to buy and ways to cook. Also, I would like to know how my lifestyle can change if I live more consciously about these points.
Details about the challenge
How long? 2 weeks
Points to keep in mind
Refuse unnecessary wrapping or take-out plastic bags, use my own
Choose products with less plastic packaging or no plastic packaging
However, in perspective of food loss reduction, buying products that are close to their expiration dates are exceptional
Utilize food I buy
Try to choose products that are produced in local area or nearby
However, buying products that are memorable for myself or my family or products to cook special dishes are exceptional

The progress of the challenge
Day 1&2
First of all, these are the vegetables that I bought or have had for a few days. The avocado (circled in red) is from Mexico, the potatoes (circled in orange) are from Hokkaido and all the other veggies are from Kumamoto prefecture. I even see the farmers' names and towns where some of them come from. |
I went to a tofu shop on the first day and bought tofu and fried tofu. I got okara, or soy palp for free.
It weighed 200g and I usually have difficulties of utilizing it whenever I get some, but I will try to use it all before I have to store in the freezer.
First, I baked okara shortbread, which I have made before.
You can download the recipe from "Cooking recipes" page.
Okara is a second product of tofu making process, but it is fibrous and you need to cook somehow.
According to a book that I read, only 1 % of okara produced in Japan is used as food.
Okara has a good amount of fiber and a lot of remaining nutritions from soy.
On the second day, I went to a market of soy sauce & miso company Fundodai.
I was able to get a big amount of miso by "put as much miso as you can" shopping.
This company puts efforts in food loss and they were selling products that are close to their expiration dates for discounted prices.
There were also different shops' vendors for the event. I refused plastic bags and used my shopping bag instead.
On the way back home, I bought coffee at LAWSON.
LAWSON is the only convenience store where you can get 10 yen discount by bringing your own bottle.
I paid 10 yen less by doing so.
For lunch, I went to a karaage shop to buy karaage. (Picture on top right)
I asked if it was okay to put my karaage into my container, and the shop staff kindly accepted it.
So I saved plastic packages and chopsticks.
In the two days, I saved: 6 plastic bags, one paper cup, plastic lid for the cup, one plastic container and chopsticks
Day 3&4
The third day was my regular shopping day.
I bought many things including ingredients for Christmas dishes and seasoning stuff.
There is a recycling box at my regular supermarket to collect plastic single-use trays, milk cartons etc.
As you know, these are collected by the city as "materials to be recycled," but actually most of them are only burned to produce energy.
I looked up on the internet and found that plastic treys collected in the box are really "recycled" to make new treys, so I have throw my plastic treys in there since one and a half months ago.
The amount of plastic waste accumulated in my house hasn't changed much until the day I go throw treys away,
but the amount of plastic waste to take to the local waste collection area got reduced by half!
We used to throw away one 30l bag every week, but now one bag every second week.
On day 4. I finaly used the rest of okara!
I used it to make okonomiyaki.
I reduced the amount of flour by half and added okara instead. The other ingredients were the same.
The dough was lighter than our usual dough and it was pretty tasty.

Day 5&6
On day 5, I went to a bakery that I recently found on the internet, but sadly, it was closed.
I've noticed that more bakeries put rolls or buns in plastic individually after COVID-19 issue started.
I wonder what they do in the bakery that I failed to go in. I will try another time.
On day 6, I bought sushi rolls for lunch at a supermarket
because I was planning to cook a lot later this day and the next day. I wanted to get myself something prepared.
Then, I found something that I always think is unnecessary.
Look at the green thing in the picture. It is called "baran," a leafy thing to make bento or dish more colorful in the package.
It used to be a real green leaf called "haran," but nowadays this plastic one is used much much much more often.
I guess some of you have had this in your bento box or prepared packaged dishes before.
When I get this with my food, I feel I got additional rubbish. I can't eat it, I have nothing to use it for.

Day 7&8
I got sweet potato slices from a neighbor.
Actually neither my husband nor me is fond of sweet potatoes,
but now that we got them, we cannot waste them. I will make dried sweet potatoes.
You can make dried sweet potatoes easily - steam them, dry them on a net.
Some people eat them as a snack, some people dry them for many days to preserve.
This is my first try to make dried sweet potatoes. Let's see how it goes...
On day 8, I went to a bakery.
I found bags of bread ends, which I like to buy when I find some.
Some bakeries collects ends cut off of bread that they use for sandwiches and sell in bag for a low price.
I bought a lot because I can freeze them.
Do you think buying bread ends is a measure to reduce food loss?
I guess it is, if they think this is an "imperfect" product but would rather sell it than waste it.
Also, I bought two small bread.
Most of their products were in plastic bags, but these two were in paper bags.

Day 9&10
These two days I didn't really buy much, so I'm going to introduce products that I tried.
(photos are below)
Two, three months ago, I quit using laundry detergent and started to use powder soap to wash clothes.
I looked into many stores to find powder soap and these were the only two kinds that I could finally find.
The blue package one is 100% soap. No additives.
We tried this one, but couldn't like the slightly oily smell that natural soap usually has.
The one with green and white colored package is 60% soap and has a light floral smell.
I think it would still be better than chemical detergent, so this is what we use now.
Another good point about these products is that they are packed in paper so you can reduce plastice waste.
One thing to note is that I need to melt powder soap with warm water before putting into the washing machine in winter.
This is sugar that we have used for the past two months.
I have used brownish sugar over white sugar considering nutrition,
but I have got another reason to choose this sugar.
Did you know that products of packed sugar that you see in supermarkets have over 60% of IMPORTED raw sugar to make them?
I wondered why the package of this sugar specifically says this is 100% domestic product.
I knew that almost all beet sugar in Japan is from Hokkaido,
but believed that sugar made from sugar canes was made from sugar canes in Japan.
I can say that this was the most shocking fact about food recently.

Day 11&12
I went shopping for new year dishes.
I went to a supermarket, a vegetable store and a meat shop to buy lots of food.
I tried to get products which have expiration dates coming close but are still good to eat around new year.
In the vegetable store, there were naked products and products with wrapped in less plastic, so it was plasticless shoping.
I also bought fresh tomatoes in different sizes and colors in a cardboard box for 150 yen.
The ones with perfect red (pink?) colored tomatoes in even sizes were sold for 800 yen.
I thought the one for 150 yen was a bargain.
You don't get to see "misshapen" veggies or fruits in Japanese supermarkets, but you can see them in veggie stores.
A couple of the tomatoes are not sweet enough, so I will make tomato sauce out of them.
