I went along with a student to a clinic as a medical interpreter. I accompany with my husband when he goes to see a doctor, but he mostly speaks Japanese. I translate doctors' Japanese only when he doesn't understand their Japanese. Most of the time, I just simplify their Japanese so my husband understands. This time, however, I had to interpret almost all Japanese and all English, which was very hard! I did interpret almost everything right and my student understood it, though (phew). One of the things I thought I should learn more is how to translate Japanese words for various types of pain such as "hiri-hiri", "piri-piri" and "chiku-chiku." We Japanese grisp the type of pain when we hear the sound of onomatopea. I have learned some of them before but couldn't remember them right away on-site. So I had to explain like "it feels pain from needles" or "like electricity runs on your dry skin in winter". (I feel ashamed writing these sentences...) I really thought I need to learn them. I have a lisence of tour guide interpreter, but it is about tourism. If I learned medical English terms and expressions, I think I would be able to help more people in many more situations. |
