In English, person's name or person pronoun can be an object of a sentence by it self. But in Japanese, in some cases, you need to add some word(s) after it. It depends on the verb. I can only introduce you a couple of examples that I can come up with right now. For example, I went to a friend. = I went to a friend's place (or where the friend is) Listen to me! = Listen to my story (or what I say) Do you hear me? = Do you hear my voice?

Today I'm going to talk about how to translate "help." In elementary level, it is often translated to "てつだう." Ex. I helped a friend. I helped a friend with his homework. How about these? A : The medicine helped. B : The teacher's advice helped. "てつだう" is used when somebody gives a hand. It is not appropriate for non-human (or animal) subject. In the case of A, when expected effects of something appear, we use "効く(きく)." We use this for medicine, energy drink etc. In other cases such as B, we use "役に立つ(やくにたつ)." So the correct sentences would be 薬が効きました。 |
