If you are at upper-intermediate level in Japanese langauge and start to make complex sentences, one of the things you want to pay attention to is twists of sentence structure. What is "twists of sentence structure"? For example, 1. a verb is not in appropriate form for its subject 2. A verb or an adjective takes place of a spot when the spot is for a noun Here are example sentences. Ex.1 私は先生に頼んで日本語を直しました。 The writer wants to say "I asked my teacher and had him correct my Japanese." The person who "corrected is not 私 but 先生, so the verb has to be 直してもらいました (receiver of benefit) Ex. 2 私の休日の過ごし方は、ドラマを見たり友達とカフェに行ったりします。 The writer wants to say "The way I spend my day off is to watch a series, go to a cafe with a friend etc." The subject is "過ごし方 the way to spend" and the second half has to end in ~こと, the word to make a verb like a noun. The correct sentence would be 私の休日の過ごし方は、ドラマを見たり友達とカフェに行ったりすることです。 Ex. 3 昨日来なかったのはバスが遅れたんです。 The writer means "The reason why I did not come yesterday is that the bus was late." In Japanese when you use ~のは to explain a reason you have to end with ・・・からです. The correct sentence would be 昨日来なかったのはバスが遅れたからです。 In Japanese sentence, a subject and its action or a status are often far from each other. Who takes the action? In what form does the verb have to be? Does the verb have to be nominalized with こと? When you make a long sentence, pay attention to the end of it. (English below)
今回は仕事の内容ではなく、それ以外の時間をどう使っているか話したいと思います。 In this post I will talk about how I spend my non-lesson time and days off. 私は仕事がたくさんあってもできるだけ自分で作ったご飯を食べるようにしています。 授業は昼ご飯を食べる時間と晩御飯を作って食べる時間に入れないようにしています。 食事は毎日だいたい同じ時間に食べます。 I try my best to eat what I cook even when I have a lot of work. So I try not to have a lesson at my lunch time, dinner time and cooking time. My husband and I eat around the same time every day. 平日は夜の授業が終わってから、残っている家事や次の日の授業の準備などをします。 昼に授業と授業の間に時間が十分あるときは、昼の家にこれらのことを済ませます。 On weekdays, I spend time after evening lessons on leftover housework and preparation of lessons next day. When I have enough time between lessons during the day, I try to utilize the time. 休みの日は出来るだけ仕事をしないようにします。 自宅での仕事だと、仕事がいつでもできてしまうので、休みと仕事の日があいまいになってしまいがちだと思います。 家族がいる場合、家族の休みに合わせて家族と過ごせる時間を増やしたいと思う方が多いと思います。 私も夫の休日に合わせたいので、週末には決まった時間に授業を入れていません。 I try not to do work-related things on my days off. It's a good thing that I can reach my work stuff easily because my home is my workplace, too. However, that can make the border of "work days" and "free days" unclear. If you have a family, you probably think of having days off on the same days as your family members and spare time to spend with your family. I want to have my days off on the same day as my husband and family living in other cities, so I don't put regular lessons on weekends. フリーランスで働く方にはおわかりいただけると思いますが、 最初の2、3年は、とにかくもらえる仕事はしなくちゃ、と思い 土曜日に授業を入れたり、時間もかなり相手に合わせたりしていました。 でもそうするといつも気持ちが「仕事の日」モードになって、 生活にメリハリがつかないんですよね・・・。 I think you understand me if you are a freelancer, too, but in the first two-three years of the business I tried to take whatever was offered to me - trying to put lessons on Saturdays, fitting the person's schedule as much as possible... That made me feel like I am always in "working mode" and the life wasn't well-modulated. 今では、自分の休みを確保することはとても大事だと思っていて、 その後入って来た生徒さんたちの授業時間をもともと授業がある日にまとめることで、 前より仕事がある日と休みの日の過ごし方を変えられるようになりました。 Now I find it important to keep my days off. I fit new students' lesson hours into the days I already have lessons. I can now spend working days and days off differently and can switch my brain modes "on" and "off." Hello everyone.
I had a pile of translation work besides my Japanese lessons last week and this week. I didn't have proper days off on the weekend because I wanted to finish the work early. I will definitely take a whole weekend off this time! Thankfully, I have got more students and more lessons. So I often think that I should plan how to spend my time efficiently. As a freelance teacher, I know that there are some people who misunderstand what I do for work and how I work, as I work mainly at home and I don't have specific hours open to students like language schools. Today I'd like to explain what I think with some facts. Misunderstanding 1 : I am free when I don't have lessons Misunderstanding 2 : I don't care if students change their lesson time Misunderstanding 3 : My work is not "a proper job" because I don't have an office About number 1. What do you think teachers do besides teaching class? Yes, class preperation. Searching for answers to questions asked in the previous lesson Previewing the next chapter Making teaching materials Preparing ansers to questions that may be asked in the next lesson Looking for news or articles that can be a topic of conversation in the next lesson Other things besides preparation of lesson contents, I preprare something to drink for a student, clean the room, warm the room up with a heater and so on. Of course I have housework, too. Lesson hours are binding hours, but my working hours are not only lesson hours. Therefore, "I am free when I don't have lessons" is wrong. Now number 2. I manage everything by myself, unlike school where there are rules to be kept between management people and teachers. So I try to adjust to students' needs and be flexible up to some level when it comes to canceling lessons and changing lesson times. Even so, setting up a day and time is just like making a promise between two people. You don't feel good when someone cancels your plan or if he changes the plan again and again, right? That applies to both work and hanging out with friends, to both busy people and people who have a lot of free time. I would love the readers of this article to know that changing a plan (lesson time) suddenly and/or frequently makes the person feel he is not important to you. I'm not writing this to my students and future students only but also to people who would like to meet me. Number 3. I don't have a work place like a school. My home is my work place. This is an extreme that some people think this kind of job is something like a hobby that housewives do besides their housework. There are many ways to work as freelance teachers, but in my case, I think of my job just like a full-time job in a company. I want to concentrate on my work even when I don't have lessons, I want to finish my job in time when I decide to work for certain hours. To me, this job is a very important factor to make my life a life I want and what I must have to make my living. (English version is coming as a seperate post)
The vegetables growing in the planters. The tomatoes are inside the house, but the coriander (the second pic) and parsley (the third pic) look fine in the outside. (English below)
Happy new year, everyone! Lots of thanks to people who visited my website, my students, all of the supporters for my work, then to my family. Let's make this year a wonderful year together. I know I wil be busier this year. There are things I want to learn besides Japanese language and I hope to do them in my free time. Also, I haven't caught a cold this winter! I hope to stay healthy for the rest of the year (359 days to go...). |
