How have you been, everyone? The winter has come. I'm guessing that it takes you some time to get off of the bed. Today I'd like to introduce some food often eaten in winter in Japan. They are good to prevent from catching a cold and help you recover quickly from a cold. I recommend you include them in your diet. 1. Winter fruit. Almost as sour as lemon. Used for pot dishes and also a hot drink if you put it in hot water with honey. The yuzu (or leftover skin after cooking) can be put in bath water to warm your body and the aroma is very relaxing. 2. One of the frequently used spices in Japan. The tangy flavor gives a good accent to dishes. Raw ginger is good to prevent a cold (killing bacteria), cooked ginger warms you up. My favorite drink for winter is black tea with sliced ginger and honey. 3. One of the winter representative vegetables. Used for various dishes, but in winter it is used especially for stew dishes. Raw raddish helps kill bacteria and digest meat and fish (protain), and cooked raddish helps warm your body. There are also dried white raddish packages. The dried one is rich in calcium and minerals. 4. A vegetable we think of when we have a cold. In Japan, we eat rice porrige when we are sick or do not have much appatite. We often add chopped green onions into it. The tangy flavor you get from raw green onion is from allicin, which helps kill bacteria, better blood circulation and digestion. Also, the slimy liquid often seen in cut thick onion has various effects to raise your immune system. I recommend that you eat the small thin onion raw, and thick long onions cooked. |
