(English below)
(=ああ、のどがいたい) Yep, as in the title. Can you read this hiragana あ゛? Hm? あ cannot have ゛? You're right. You didn't learn such a hiragana. Since when we don't know, this hiragana exists. However, this is not a correct hiragana so please don't use it in formal, official writings. Basically, the sound of ゛ is made by vigorously exhaling breath from your mouth with some part closed (closed lips, closed throat or upper inner mouth touched with a tongue), so it is impossible to make this sound あ゛ because あいうえお are pronounced with an open mouth. I tried to find out who started to use it when, but didn't find the answer. I think some manga artist started to use it. This imaginery hiragana letters are used when a character screams, or a character cannot spreak because of his damaged throat or something. In manga there is no sound, so they tried to express as clearly as possible what their characters are saying only with the letters. So, to make a similar sound to the あ゛, You need to narrower the space in your throat, and pretend being a person who has a cold and sore throat. You can make the other sounds い゛う゛え゛お゛by the same way. Now, imagine you are a manga charactor and say the phrases below! (You lost a match) あ゛あ゛あ゛あ゛ーーーーーーーーーーー!!!!!!!! (You sang too much at karaoke) あ゛あ゛、のどがい゛だい゛。 (=ああ、のどがいたい Oh, my throat is sore) (English below)
How are you spending a beaufitul Sunday? I replaced my computer this week. I had used my old computer for six years and it had problems. My husband bought a new one and I got his old one. How many years do people use their computers in avarage? Are six years long? The new computer keyboard is not Japanese and some keys are located in different places. I make type mistakes sometimes. I hope I get used to this computer soon and to make no mistake when typing. When we Japanese people think of "Western accent" Japanese, the common features are 1. "stressed" and "non-stressed" accent (while Japanese language has an up and down accent) 2. remarkable "R" and "L" sounds (most Japanese people think of "r" from English "r") And 3. words without differences of "long vowel" and "short vowel", or no small "っ" pause In Japanese, long vowel and short vowel make a big difference, as well as small "っ" pause. っ doesn't have a sound, but it has a pause as long as one mora, or a beat. Mora is important in Japanese. Mora is beats of spoken languages. Let's pronounce the words below. ゆうびんきょく post office Now, try to take the same length of time for each section divided with - clapping hands. ゆ-う-び-ん-きょ-く It's 6 beats. How about びょういん hospital びょ-う-い-ん 4 beats びよういん hair salon び-よ-う-い-ん 5 beats ちず map ち-ず 2 beats チーズ cheese チ-ー-ズ 3 beats Next step. When there is っ, we take a pause so there is no sound, but we prepare our mouth and tongue for the next sound. For example, きって (postal) stamp in romaji, "kitte" Your mouth and tongue have to be formed like this: ki-(tt)-te 3 beats しっかり properly, firmly in romaji, "shikkari" Your mouth and tongue formed as "shi-(kk)-ka-ri" 4 beats If you care about Japanese mora, your pronunciation will be way better. Many of you know that "-teiru" is used in such ways as
Progress of activities "be doing" ex. 今、電話で話しています。 (now I am talking on the phone) Habitual activities "(always, everyday) do something" ex. いつもその店で野菜を買っています。(I always buy vegetables at that store) Status after a change "(got A and now) be A" ex. 結婚しています。(I am married.) , 太っています。(I am fat.) Today let's learn one more usage of "-teiru." Here is an example. A woman walking ahead of you drops her handkerchief. You want to stop her to give it to her. You say 待ってください。 Please wait./please wait a second. It's fine. Now, you are on the way to a station, where you are supposed to meet your friend. You want him to stay there and wait for you. You say 待っていてください。 Please stay and wait (keep waiting). Second example. You have a lot of bags after shopping with a friend. Your mobile phone is ringing. You want to free one of your hands to get the call. You say to your friend, passing a bag 持ってください。 Please hold it. /Please take and hold it. Your phone call is finished, but you have to take a note. You still have to use your hand, so you say to your friend まだ持っていてください。Please keep holding it. Do you get it? The ーていてください indicates a longer time of the activity. In English this "-teiru" part is equivalent to "stay", "remain" or "keep." In some songs there is a phrase "見ていてください." "見てください" would mean "now look at it" but "見ていてください" is more like "watch it" Ex. 先生、私はこれからもっと日本語が上手になりますから、見ていてください! Sensei, I will be better at Japanese, so keep an eye on my growth. |
