Mora is important in Japanese. Mora is beats of spoken languages. Let's pronounce the words below. ゆうびんきょく post office Now, try to take the same length of time for each section divided with - clapping hands. ゆ-う-び-ん-きょ-く It's 6 beats. How about びょういん hospital びょ-う-い-ん 4 beats びよういん hair salon び-よ-う-い-ん 5 beats ちず map ち-ず 2 beats チーズ cheese チ-ー-ズ 3 beats Next step. When there is っ, we take a pause so there is no sound, but we prepare our mouth and tongue for the next sound. For example, きって (postal) stamp in romaji, "kitte" Your mouth and tongue have to be formed like this: ki-(tt)-te 3 beats しっかり properly, firmly in romaji, "shikkari" Your mouth and tongue formed as "shi-(kk)-ka-ri" 4 beats If you care about Japanese mora, your pronunciation will be way better.
