I went to Tachioka Nature Park in Uto city on Saturday with my husband to see cherry blossoms. It was about 50 minutes from the center of Kumamoto city. In the park, there are two big ponds. One was made by Kiyomasa Kato in 1611 and the other one was created in 1855. Fully bloomed cherry blossoms of 2000 cherry trees attract many people every year during hanami season. This year, it kept raining last weekend and it was going to rain (and it actually did) this Sunday, so quite a lot of people visited the park yesterday. Fully occupied parking space and even temporary parking spaces, too! I made casual bento for lunch and we ate at a bench and enjoyed walking around the ponds. I truly recommend this place if you haven't been there yet. There are a lot more cherry trees than you see in the photos. Especially the road between the ponds has cherry trees on the both sides and it is very beautiful. If you go for hanami, do not forget bento and a picnic sheet!

(English below)
Good evening. There are only 5 days until the only JLPT in 2020. My students have been trying to find spare time to study for the test every day. About 10 days ago, I held a mock test event, renting a room at a community center. I limited the number of people to prevent the COVID-19 infection spread. Some had a good result, some didn't. The result of the test made them recognize which section they should focus on in the last two weeks before the test. One of the students who took the mock test had a score which was far from the passing level. However, he not gets over 60 % of accuracy in kanji, vocabulary and grammar sections of a drill exercise book! The result showed us that people can make a big improvement in a short time. I hope that you utilize the remaining days to study as much as possible so that you don't regret after the test not having studied enough.
Hi everyone. I guess you are studying today if you are planning to take the JLPT next month. Some of the applicants may take the JLPT only to see their current Japanese skills, not necessarily to pass the exam this time. However, most of you will take the exam to pass. I have taken many language-related exams myself, as I love languages and language skills required were different depending on the time. I once worked full-time, taught private Japanese lessons after work and studied for exams on weekdays and weekends. Sometimes I went to a cafe to study on weekends. My motivation to study for exams is to picture myself after passing an exam. Of course, it makes me very happy to pass an exam, but I am excited more when I think about how I could make the most of the skills. Me teaching Japanese in better ways, me helping people with communication by translation and interpretation, me as an English tour guide, me talking about things more deeply in foreign languages... I simply like myself being able to do more things. Questions in the JLPT are not raw conversations with real people. The text is not what was written specially for you. The exam exercises may not feel real to you. If you think this way: "These will help me in the future." maybe you can be more positive about studying for the exam. Soy meat is for vegetarians and those who try to eat less animal protein. I bought this pack of soy meat (it is wet and has a slight broth flavor) for a half price at a supermarket the other day.
Last time I cooked a dish with soy meat, my husband didn't really like it. I wondered how the soy meat could become a tasty dish and thought that meat sauce (tomato sauce with minced meat) with the soy meat and a little bit of real meat. We both enjoyed spaghetti with the sauce! The soy meat flavor didn't change the sauce much. (English below)
It's been over a month since the last blog post! I have been spending more time for preparation of classes for students who will take the JLPT in December. Also, I had plans on weekends. Then I finally realized that it's been such a long time. The weather has been pretty, hasn't it? We don't use the air conditioners anymore in the house. I think it's the perfect season for taking a walk. Speaking of walk, have you noticed some smell when you are outside? There are a couple of smells that make me feel autumn has come. Kinmokusei (orange osmathus) The tree which has many small flowers in autumn. The flowers has a distinctively sweet smell and you will definitely notice it when you walk by. Ginnan (Gingko nuts from maidenhair tree) Nuts from maidenhair trees. Nuts fall off from trees in autumn and the skin and fruit smell.....badly. Many people do not like this smell, but the nuts themselves are used in Japanese dishes such as savory egg custard (chawan-mushi). The Kumamoto's symbol Kumamoto castle has nickname "Ginnan-jo (gingko castle)." What smell makes you feel autumn?
